Ontario Homesteading Festival

We had a blast presenting at the Ontario Homesteading Festival in Bracebridge, Ontario on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Our presentation was only one hour long and we enjoyed the other fabulous talks and vendor displays at the Ontario Homesteading Festival the rest of the day!

How to Start an Off-Grid Homesteading Community

Our mission at Off the Grid Communities is to offer opportunities to join off-grid communities, in beautiful wilderness locations. The advantages of forming a community (rather than operating a homestead individually or with a single family) include:

  • Greater affordability of land.
  • Communal farming/homesteading allows for individuals or families to take scheduled time off, without shutting down the homesteading operations.

This presentation covered:

  • What are the different legal structures possible for land ownership and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
  • How do you form your community before you buy land together?
  • An example of an existing off-grid, homesteading community, that we belong to.

This day-long show featured both homestead goodies, such as honey and fresh produce, as well as workshops and homesteading vendors to make you more productive in your own homesteading endeavours. If you didn’t make it out in 2023, we hope to see you next year!
